KUCHING: The fishing boat with 14 Malaysians detained by Indonesian authorities arrived safely at the Santubong boat club jetty here yesterday (Friday).
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Deputy Director of Search and Rescue Unit Musli Jaffar said they received a report on the boat’s detention at about 9.30am on Thursday.
“After successful negotiations with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the fishing boat was released at 2pm on the sameday,” he said in a press conference.
He said the fishing boat, which was seized on Wednesday, was brought to TNI’s naval base at the Grand Natunan island.
“The fishing boat was detained 53.2 nautical miles from Tanjung Datu, the international border between Malaysia and Indonesia,” Musli said.
He said although the vessel was in Malaysian waters, the Indonesian authorities claimed it had encroached their waters.
“We have been using a map recognised since 1979 to refer to the incident,” he said.
Musli also said the government was still negotiating with the Indonesian authorities to release another Malaysian fishing vessel.
According to him, the boat was detained at about 11am on Wednesday.
“All three crew members on the second boat are Indonesians but the owner is a Malaysian,” he said.
He urged the maritime community in Sarawak to stay out of international borders to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
Abdul Oswazir Abang Ahmad, 47, the skipper of the fishing boat released yesterday, said it was the first time that he had been detained by Indonesian authorities in his 20 years of fishing in the area.
“We will be looking for a new spot to fish after this,” Oswazir, from Kampung Sungai Berdaun said, adding that they had been treated well by the Indonesian authorities.
